Mongolia #2 - Buuz

Mongolia

Today, I am going to share with you a Mongolian meal called Buuz. Buuz might be an unfamiliar dish to
you but it is simply a variation of the common dumpling. I discovered this meal during my internship in
Mongolia where my host mom would serve it often. It is simple to make and can even be served as a
breakfast dish in preparation for a busy day.

Buuz

Buuz is easy to make and is usually served as a main dish. In Mongolia, most vegetables are expensive since the main things they grow are potatoes, carrots and cabbage. It is a luxury to have vegetables for your meal.

This dish is filled with minced meat that you should prepare before hand by seasoning the meat to your preferences. You can also add water to make the meat smooth and easy to work with.

The dough is simple, just containing flour and water. This is why the meat needs to be seasoned correctly because it is the spices that make Buuz so good. Every Buuz that you eat will be different depending on the way people prepare the meal. It's like a surprise, on the outside they all look the same but when you bite into the dumpling that's when you discover the flavor.

Dumpling, Recipes, Travel

There are three different ways to close a Buuz but the most traditional way is the one displayed on the picture above. When you shape it this way it is called a round Buuz.

The recipe is quite simple, just click here if you want to know more about it.
