Tapas in Barcelona
Bodega Biarritz 1881
Like its name states, Bodega Biarritz has been in business in downtown Barcelona since 1881. Since then, it has earned its placed as one of the number one destinations to go for traditional Catalan tapas in Barcelona. The restaurant is small, it only has tables that sit two people and the restaurant itself nothing fancy. You will also have to wait in line to eat at this legendary place, no reservations. I waited in line about 30 minutes on a Wednesday night, but it was defiantly worth the wait.
Surprise Menu
The staff here is what makes this place unique. As soon as you sit down they go through the menu with you giving suggestions and recommendations. I started out with a glass of sangria, a punch like drink made out of red wine and fruit. Then we ordered the highly recommended surprise menu. It consists of 8 tapas that our waiter picked out for us. He asked us some simple questions such as if we like spicy things and our meat preferences and then he was off to pick out our mystery dinner.
The Food
As you will see in the above picture our appetizer was a potato pie. It was creamy and filling and just the right dish to get this experience started. It was followed by two hot dishes below, one with red sauce and the other with a white cream sauce. I do not remember the names of these tapas but I do remember how delicious they were!
We loved our appetizer and first two tapas. After being skeptical about the surprise menu our waiter was impressing us and we were looking forward to the next ones. He brought the other six tapas out at one time. As you can see below this took up all the room on our small table. These small dishes are filled with so much flavor. We had a hard time eating them all!
